Birth Doula

What on Earth is a Birth Doula?!

Let’s be real: bringing a baby into the world is no small feat. Whether you’re planning a serene home birth, a hospital delivery, or something in between, it helps to have a calm, encouraging, knowledgeable presence who’s there just for you. That’s where a birth doula comes in. A birth doula is a professional who draws on their training and experience to provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother (and her partner) before, during, and shortly after childbirth. Think of a doula as your birth coach, cheerleader, comfort expert, and encyclopedia of birth wisdom—all rolled into one.

What I don’t do:

A doula is not a midwife or your OB, which means I don’t catch babies or make medical decisions. My job is to support you, advocate for your wishes, and help you stay grounded when things get intense (because labor is, well… labor!).

What I do:

  • Educate you on the natural, physiological childbirthing process

  • Help you prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally for birth

  • Offer evidence-based information so you can make informed decisions

  • Provide comfort techniques like massage, counterpressure, and breathing

  • Create a calm and grounded atmosphere (yes, I pack essential oils and snacks)

  • Support your partner so they feel confident in supporting you

  • Stick with you every step of the way

Why it matters:

Studies have shown that having a doula can lead to shorter labors, fewer interventions, reduced need for pain medication, and higher satisfaction with the birth experience. Plus, it just feels really good to have someone on your team who’s seen it all and isn’t fazed by the intensity of birth.

The bottom line:

As your birth doula, I act as your steady hand, soft voice, and fierce advocate in one of life’s most beautifully intense moments. I don’t take over—I help you rise. With compassion, knowledge, and a whole lot of heart, I am here to walk with you through the holy work of bringing life into the world.

What are the benefits of placenta encapsulation?

After birth, mothers lose the generous amount of hormones that they spent accumulating throughout the duration of their pregnancy, and adjusting to this change can potentially bring a challenging emotional state such as postpartum depression, aka the “Baby Blues.” Reintroducing these hormones, vitamins, and other nutrients can help to slowly taper a mother into a non-pregnant hormonal level, as well as provide many of the following benefits:

  • Increased release of the hormone oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to normal size and encourages bonding with the infant. This hormone is known as the “love and bonding” hormone

  • Increase in CRH, a stress-reducing hormone

  • Decrease in postpartum depression levels

  • Restoration of iron levels in the blood

  • Increase in milk production

  • Improved mood and increased energy
